Kalaripayattu is one of the oldest forms of martial art of Kerala. It is practiced and performed in southern parts of India. In addition to Kerala, the martial art from is practiced in some parts of Tamilnadu and Karnataka.Kalaripayat includes strikes, kicks, grappling, preset forms, weaponry and healing methods. The art form is classified based on the Geographical regions its being practiced which include the northern style of the Malayalis, the southern style of the Tamils and the central style from inner Kerala. The northern style was performed primarily by the Nairs, the martial caste of Keralaand Ezhavas.

The southern style, called adimurai, was followed by theNadars and has certain unique features. The Northern kalaripayat is based on the principle of hard technique and the southern style focuses on the soft techniques, even though both systems make use of internal and external concepts.kalaris served as meeting places for the acquisition of knowledge on various subjects.
